DANGEROUS CARGO CLASS DESCRIPTION
 
 

Class
Description
Class 1
 
Explosives
This class comprises of the divisions: 1.1 , 1.2 , 1.3 , 1.4 , 1.5 and 1.6 Explosives also have a compatibility group letter. Usually, only explosives of Division 1.4, compatibility. Group S are acceptable for carriage on passenger aircraft.
Class 2
 
Gases
This class comprises three divisions: 2.1 Flammable gases, 2.2 Non flammable, Non toxic gases , 2.3 Toxic gases
Class 3
 
Flammable Liquids
Remember that flash point of Flammable Liquid is the temperature at which a vapour from liquid could be ignited by a flame or spark. It is not the temperature at which it would ignite spontaneously.
Class 4
 
Flammable Solids, Spontaneously Combustible Substances and Water Reactive
This class comprises three divisions: 4.1 Flammable solids, 4.2 Substances liable to spontaneous combustion, 4.3 Substances which in contact with water, either emit flammable gases or become spontaneously combustible. (Also known as "Dangerous When Wet").
Class 5
 
Oxidizing Substances and Organic Peroxides
This class comprises two divisions: 5.1 Oxidizing Substances, 5.2 Organic Peroxide (Organic peroxides may cause severe damage to the eye if allowed to come into contact with them.)
 
Class 6
 
Toxic (Poisonous) and Infectious Substances
 
This class comprises two divisions: 6.1 Poisonous Substances, 6.2 Infectious Substances
Class 7
 
Radioactive Materials
This class has no divisions, but there are three categories which are determined by the radiation level of the complete package. Fissile materials are not usually acceptable for air carriage without special arrangements.
 
Class 8
 
Corrosives
 
This class has no divisions. (Substance in this class cause damage to the skin and/or metal.)
Class 9
 
Miscellaneous Dangerous Goods
This class comprises substances whose properties do not match those of any of the other eight classes, but would pose a risk to safety if not properly prepared for carriage.
